2008 Schedule & Dates (see sidebar)
Curriculum
Asana & Anatomy
Cultivating a personal yoga practice is the cornerstone for authentic
and creative teaching. Students enrolled in the teacher training
program will learn how to develop a personal practice that is fully
conscious, incorporating alignment principles for the body, mind
& heart. Essential areas covered will include:
- Benefits and contraindications of postures;
- Explanation and application of the Anusara Principles of Alignment;
- Creative use of props and modifications of postures;
- Hands-on assists;
- General anatomy of the human body & anatomy of movement
including identification of major muscle groups and bones; and
- Range of motion, tension and compression.
Pranayama & Meditation
Pranayama and meditation are in many ways the heart of any yoga
practice. Through consistent practice they unveil powerful benefits,
transforming the practitioner. Key components taught will include:
- Regular practice of specific pranayama and meditation techniques;
- Identification of the main nadis, vayus and chakras and how
their charge manifests physically and emotionally;
- How energy moves and how to move energy; and
- How to teach specific pranayama and meditation techniques.
Philosophy, Ethics & Lifestyle
Yoga is a frame of mind and a way of life. As part of the teacher
training program, students will learn about the history of yoga
from its early roots to its current form in the West. In addition,
students will explore the following:
- Classical and Tantric Yoga Philosophies;
- Ethics of living yoga on and off the mat;
- The business of Yoga; and
- How to market yourself as a teacher.
Teaching Methodology
A skillful teacher is one who is grounded in knowledge while also
being motivated internally by her yoga practice to evolve spiritually
. At the same time, the teacher must be sensitive to her students,
always adapting her teaching to what she sees in the classroom.
Participants will learn how to:
- Script & sequence the Modified Primary Series of Ashtanga
Yoga;
- Create a hatha yoga lesson plan based on a theme;
- Step a pose up or down and teach to multiple levels of students;
- Read a student's body using principles of anatomy and energy;
- Move and direct energy in the classroom;
- Develop a course syllabus;
- Use specific techniques for illustrating a point; and
- Teach fellow trainees and real students.
Satsanga (fellowship)
A powerful aspect of the program is the satsanga, or fellowship
among the trainees. During the training there is ample opportunity
to meet and socialize with fellow trainees. Many participants find
that the satsanga provides a strong support network that
uplifts them towards their highest aspirations and even form lifelong
friendships. A graduation celebration will also be held at the close
of the course to celebrate the success of the participants.

Time Commitment
A number of books are required reading for the course. In addition there are some written homework assignments. Students should budget a minimum of 10 hours of homework time between each weekend teacher training session. In addition, participants will be required to observe, assist and student teach classes outside of the YTT weekends. Details are as listed below.
Observing and Assisting Classes (20-25 hours)
In addition to the scheduled Intensive and Weekends, participants are required to attend additional yoga classes at It’s Yoga during the course of the training for the purpose of observing classes and practicing hands-on adjustments in a live classroom setting. Participants should count on attending a minimum of 20 classes above and beyond the scheduled meeting times to fulfill the assisting and observing requirements.
Student Teaching (10-12 hours)
As a part of the certification process, participants will be required to teach one or more demonstration classes. A demonstration class is a complete class taught from start to finish by the yoga teacher trainee. Fellow teacher trainees and the director of the Yoga Teacher Training program will attend and provide evaluation feedback. In addition to teaching one or more practicum classes, YTT participants are required to attend a minimum of six classes taught by their colleagues.
Ashtanga Practicums will be conducted during the first two weeks following the fourth or fifth weekend teacher training session. Hatha Practicums will likely be held during the first two weeks following the eighth weekend teacher training session. Practicums will generally be scheduled between the hours of 6-11am Monday through Friday, but variations will be made in order to accommodate the schedule needs of the teacher training participants.
