Workshop: Ayurvedic Secrets

Ayurvedic Secrets for Health and Longevity: a three day workshop with Sonam Targee
July 28 - 30, 2006

We are all unique. Therefore, blanket statements for diet and exercise don't work for everyone. Ayurveda offers a system that tailors yoga, lifestyle and diet specifically to your uniqueness — all with a track record of nearly 5,000 years to prove it!

In this workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Empower yourself by understanding your unique constitutional type
  • Alter your lifestyle to balance your doshas, clear up chronic ailments and prevent disease, and
  • Find simple ways of honoring and aligning with Nature to create optimal health!

All workshop hours are Yoga Alliance approved (for more information, see below):

Eating in America
In a country where regulations and minimum daily food requirements are dictated by a federal agency and food politics, it's sometimes difficult to listen to our bodies and really trust what is optimal for our health. Empirical evidence shows that the food pyramid isnÕt optimal for everyone. So why do we keep trying to force ourselves into a mold that doesn't fit?

Did You Know That...

  • when you eat
  • what flavors you favor
  • when you go to sleep and wake up
  • what types of physical activities you engage in and favor
  • your emotional patterns
  • the seasons and their influence on your dosha

Can make you sick or healthy? You decide!

What Students Are Saying:

"Sonam is so kind and accepting of each person. I have studied with Sonam before, and each time I've deepened my knowledge and application of Ayurveda in my life and in my teaching."
Ñ Kit Spahr, senior yoga teacher

"As a yoga practitioner of six years, I feel I have noticed myself going at it too hard, and this workshop helped me put a name to it. I feel as if the weekend really helped introduce me to a balanced whole lifestyle."

Understanding Your Tendencies
Friday, July 28 — 2:00 - 5:00 pm

Have you ever wondered why you have a propensity for certain health ailments? While genetics may play a part in who we are, Ayurveda looks at the body as a microcosm of the Universe and the five elements. Each of us is made up of a unique combination of these elements and we tend to go out of balance because of the principle, "like attracts like". In other words, if you are a hard-driving type A personality, you will naturally like foods and activities that are strong, and hard-driving. Over time, the body will accumulate an excess of this "hard-driving" quality that can lead to a host of physical ailments like high blood pressure and other inflammatory diseases. By learning to understand the doshas and your constitutional type, you can begin to make changes to your diet, lifestyle, exercise plan and yoga practice that will move you into balance and radiant health. Students will be provided with enough information (and handouts) to assess doshic imbalances in themselves, their students and loved ones.

Ayurveda and Women's Health
Friday, July 28 — 7:30 - 9:30 pm

Learn simple treatment methods for balancing the doshas and reducing PMS, menopause, hormone imbalances, osteoporosis, and low libido, among others. Through the use of herbs, diet, exercise, bodywork, and spiritual practices, you'll learn how to balance Vata, Pitta and Kapha in the different stages of a woman's life cycle. Students attending should have a basic understanding of Ayurveda. Please bring your health concerns so that Sonam can help you address these. If you are new to Ayurveda, it is strongly recommended that you attend Friday afternoon before attending this workshop.

Asanas for Balancing the Doshas
with Sonam & It's Yoga Director, Laurel Hodory
Saturday, July 29 — 3:00 - 6:00 pm

Learn how the five elements, the chakras and the three constitutional types present themselves in an indivudal's dosha. Based on this understanding, participants will learn how to balance Vata, Pitta, and Kapha using specific postures, sequencing and esoteric practices of yoga. Please wear comfortable yoga clothes and bring a notebook.

Chant Your Heart Open! Kirtan with Sonam
Saturday, July 29 — 6:15 - 7:30 pm, By Donation

Join us for the healing and devotional practice of chanting. This is a particularly healing activity for those with strong Pitta or Vata elements in their constitution. Sonam will lead you through a number of healing chants, briefly explaining the meaning of the chant and providing written lyrics for you to chant along with. Also, Sonam usually brings some fun percussion instruments along and invites audience participation.

Activating Prana with Marma
Sunday, July 30 — 9:00 - 11:30 am

From an ancient universal medicine perspective, our physical bodies are an expression of the underlying subtle body. The subtle body is made up of a series of energy channels or pathways known as meridians or nadis that conduct prana, or vital energy. A marma point is the intersection of two or more of these channels. Symptoms of illness in the body often first appear in these channels where prana is not flowing freely. By applying pressure, essential oils, and moxa (herbs) to the marma points and meridians, the organs can be activated, balancing the doshas, and restoring health and radiance. This year, there will be a much greater emphasis on locating a larger number of the 108 marma points using hands on bodywork in pairs. Students attending the Sunday workshop should have previous study experience with Sonam or should have attended the Friday and Saturday afternoon workshops before attending this one.
